vocal
rangeEvery singer wishes
to be able to sing higher and with effortless ability,
here is how you can extend your vocal
range.
Beginning
singing technique
It is
necessary to first understand the basics of proper singing
technique before you attempt to expand your vocal range. If you
are a beginner I would suggest you start with a good
introductory course in how to
sing. The local university or community college often has a
great intro to singing course and is a good way to start. The
first serious exposure I had to proper singing technique was at
a community college so I know what a wonderful environment it
is. Don't worry about being embarrassed; everyone is in the
same boat. I also recommend a fine course of material from the
folks at Singorama.
Remember that it is very important to warm up
your voice before attempting to stretch your vocal range. No
runner or basketball player goes out to perform without warming
up first and neither should you. This is so important I cannot
over emphasize it. You can warm up with the lessons your
teacher or course will show you, a combination of scales and
sliding movements which will gradually increase in
difficulty.
Vocal warm
up

As you work
on your vocal range, move slowly up to a higher voice, be aware
of how your posture is and your chest and neck position. It is
very important not to alter your instrument (your body in this
case) as it will affect your tone. It is also very important
not to over do it. You can injure your voice easily. If you
have ever yelled all day at a football game you know how it
feels the next day. This is a bad thing for a singer, don't do
it.
If you
begin to feel tired or slightly hoarse this is a sign that you
should stop. Stop. It is much better to come back later in the
day or tomorrow than it is to push a little too hard and have
to recover too long before you can continue. This is not so
hard to recognize but very hard to follow through on. If you
can know when to stop it will be well for you in the long run.
Learn to recognize when you are tired or over doing it with
your voice.
Singing
performance tips
You should
always work in front of a mirror at this stage of singing. It
helps to watch your posture and position of your head, neck and
shoulders and you can correct as you go. It also helps if you
can record yourself. This is an invaluable tool to hear what
you really sound like, not what you think you sound
like.
The quest
to expand your vocal range is ongoing and one which every
singer undertakes at some point. Use these tips and proceed
with care and a positive attitude. You can do
it.
